Recovery Without Walls’ acupuncture group sessions are led by licensed practitioners who specialize in acudetox. Sessions are held at the RWW office in Falmouth and various off-site locations throughout the Cape.
Upon arrival, clients are asked to fill out a brief questionnaire. Then, they are seated in a comfortable, reclining chair and given a nice yoga blanket. The licensed practitioner who is leading the session will greet each individual and answer any questions they may have. When ready, the practitioner will tap the acupuncture needles into the outer ear.
This process is virtually painless. Sometimes, individuals may feel a slight pinch or tingling, but this typically subsides quickly. Soft, relaxing music is played and the practitioner encourages everyone to close their eyes. Clients then have 35-40 minutes to relax and let the acupuncture take effect. People may fall asleep, daydream, meditate or silently recite positive affirmations… or just be. Whatever feels most comfortable.
At the end of the session, the practitioner will gently remove the acupuncture needles and individuals will reacclimate to their surroundings. Before leaving, clients will fill out another brief questionnaire about their acupuncture experience. We collect basic data to improve our practices and prove the efficacy of this underutilized mode of healing. Names are never shared.
One choice can make all the difference. Choosing to try acupuncture will open more doors than you can even imaginable. By saying “yes” to even one session of acupuncture, you are giving yourself the opportunity to heal. You are putting yourself first and showing yourself that you want to get better.
You have the power to heal your mind, body and soul. You have the power to change your life.
Say YES to healing. Say YES to acupuncture.
The craving brain is constantly in overdrive, drumming up any number of thoughts, scenarios and situations. These can feel inescapable, but acupuncture can help. Acupuncture is proven to greatly reduce anxiety and allow the brain to slow down and relax even in the midst of intense withdrawal symptoms, bouts of anxiety or extreme stress. It helps quiet the chatter of the mind that is so strongly correlated with cravings and the misuse of substances. Acupuncture gives individuals a chance to unwind, reset and continue with their recovery.
Organizations like Yale School of Medicine, Columbia University1 and Recovery Without Walls have all proven that acupuncture is incredibly effective in the treatment of addiction and prevention of relapse. This is a science that we don’t really understand but what we do know is that it works. And that is what matters.
Data confirms that our method of acupuncture reduces all 5 precursors to relapse and helps individuals feel more grounded. 99% of our clients report less anxiety, less cravings and less desire to use after each acupuncture session.
The impressive efficacy of acupuncture is a firm reminder that sometimes, all it takes is saying ‘yes’ to the possibility of healing. Just one session of acupuncture can prevent relapse, which means someone’s sobriety can continue and they can keep building on the work they’ve been putting in.
With Recovery Without Walls’ expansive community model, any woman who is experiencing cravings, having a bad day or just wanting to feel better can receive acupuncture at any of our Cape Cod locations. Since these acupuncture sessions are easily accessible and free of charge, there is always relief around the corner for anyone in need.

More About Our Method
Auricular acupuncture is done on five specific points in the ear. Each point corresponds with a different part of the body or mind and so, this method of acupuncture offers varying levels of mental and physical healing. Auricular acupuncture at these points helps detoxify the corresponding bodily systems to help reset both the body and the mind.
Yale School of Medicine describes the points as such…
“The five points are: (1) The Autonomic Point which calms the nervous system and helps with overall relaxation; (2) the Shen Men or “spirit gate,” which reduces anxiety and nervousness; (3) the Kidney Point, for calming fears and healing internal organs; (4) the Liver Point for detoxification, blood purification, and to quell aggression; and (5) the Lung Point, which promotes aeration and helps clients let go of grief.”3
This method of auricular acupuncture to treat addiction (also known as acudetox) was developed by the revolutionary Dr. Michael A. Smith in 1970. Dr. Smith pioneered the usage of acupuncture for this societal epidemic and truly changed the course of history for the world of addiction.
Dr. Smith’s technique quickly became a reputable and respected way of treating individuals with addictions. Dr. Smith made significant progress in bringing this treatment to the people who need it most and Recovery Without Walls is honored to be furthering this mission.
Bill Dougherty, the Executive Director of Recovery Without Walls, spoke Dr. Smith before his death. In their last conversation, the late Dr. Smith encouraged Bill to help bring this treatment to the masses and this, amongst other happenings, has fueled Bill to establish a comprehensive, multi-level acupuncture program for women in Cape Cod affected by addiction.
With Dr. Smith’s blessing, Bill is working to bring acupuncture to women in all stages of recovery to help them recover from addiction and any related trauma that may have occurred before, during or after active addiction.
Using Dr. Smith’s method, Recovery Without Walls introduced a revolutionary new community-based model for acudetox on the Cape Cod. By removing all barriers to access and making this treatment available to women in various areas of the Cape, free of charge, Recovery Without Walls has brought this incredibly effective treatment to marginalized groups of individuals to help them recover from addiction and related trauma, like abuse, assault, death and many other traumatic situations.
Recovery Without Walls, amongst countless donors and volunteers, is committed to getting this life-saving, drug-free, no-cost program to as many women as possible. If you’d like to support the cause, please contribute today.
History
Acupuncture is a well-established practice where trained practitioners tap tiny, virtually painless needles into designated points in the body. This technique originated in Asia thousands of years ago and is widely known to have impressive effects on the mind and body.
Acupuncture for the treatment of addiction (also known as acudetox) has been used for decades and after seeing its promising results, Dr. Michael Smith helped found the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association in 1985 to help bring acudetox to individuals and communities around the globe. Now, worldwide, thousands of substance use treatment facilities use his method of treatment and Dr. Smith himself consulted over 100 government and non-government agencies.
Acupuncture was the primary treatment for addiction in the United States until the year 2000 when insurance companies chose to stop covering this mode of healing. After 2000, the accessibility of acupuncture to treat addiction dropped drastically but it is now steadily on the rise once again thanks to increased awareness of its effectiveness in treating addiction and helping prevent relapse.
Auricular acupuncture’s proven efficacy, cost effectiveness and easy administration has made it an enticing treatment option for various organizations across the United States. Unlike pharmaceutical recovery drugs like methadone and suboxone, there are no major side effects and it is not addictive. This simple and easy practice helps individuals heal from addiction and become better members of the community.
Leading universities like Yale University and Columbia University have conducted numerous studies4, 5 proving that acupuncture can be a life-changing treatment for people dealing with addiction. Yale School of Medicine even has their own acudetox program at their Substance Abuse Treatment Unit.
The United States military also recognizes the power of acupuncture. For every morphine syringe given to combat medics, they are also given acupuncture needles. The Air Force and the U.S. Army both now have Battlefield Acupuncture programs for immediate pain relief from some of combat’s most grueling injuries.
911 responders, people affected by Hurricane Katrina6 and other survivors of traumatic events have been effectively treated with acupuncture as well.
